Ingredients

  • 1 medium grapefruit, peeled
  • 1 medium orange
  • ½ medium lemon
  • 1 (1-inch) piece fresh organic ginger root, peeled
  • 1 (1-inch) piece fresh organic turmeric root, peeled
  • ½ clove garlic
  • Pinch freshly ground black pepper

Instructions

  • In a blender, combine (whole) grapefruit, juice from the orange and lemon, ginger, turmeric, garlic and pepper. Blend until smooth (adjusting ingredients to taste, if necessary).
  • Place a small sieve or strainer over a mason jar or glass cup. .
  • Pour liquid into strainer and serve immediately or store in refrigerator for up to 4 days

I ended up using 100% real orange juice (orange juice was the only ingredient,) 100% real grapefruit juice (grapefruit juice was the only ingredient,) organic ginger paste, organic ground turmeric, and the rest of the ingredients as called for. It tasted like spicy ginger grapefruit juice to me. Is it supposed to taste that way, or is it because of the ingredients I used?

  2. Is there any reason this shouldn’t be given to children? If not, would the serving size be different?

  3. Love love love this! I enjoy each ingredient for its own goodness – combined, wow! I omitted the garlic (love it, but not first thing in the morning) and used cayenne instead of black pepper, and it was amazing! Had an ounce, enjoyed it enough to add the other ounce (2 ounce serving suggestion) to my shake. Yum!

Re: substituting Cayenne pepper for the black pepper: Although both are nutritional additions to a recipe, the reason for including the black pepper is the presence of “piperine,” the compound responsible for the massively-increased absorption of the valuable Turmeric; cayenne pepper does not contain piperine.

    1. You can actually buy whole tumeric already frozen in Asian and Halal markets and it’s good for a year, so I don’t think it loses its potency.

This is excellent!  My husband always buys the expensive store bought wellness/immunity shots, but he said this one was much better!  I push the pulp through the strainer and I actually save the pulp – I kinda like it by the spoonfuls. Definitely a keeper and nice to have during cold season or whenever you might need it.

    it! I think I will add a little honey and maybe even cayenne for kick. I also am going to juice the grapefruit next time so the ginger, garlic and turmeric will stay in the shot and not the pulp when strained.

  9. I have never tried a “shot” like this before. It makes sense though, and all the ingredients were unprocessed and fresh. It tasted good and I will see how I feel in the next few days! Flu season is pretty much here, and it is getting cooler and wetter in the PNW, so I want to be prepared!

  15. The recipe calls for 11” of turmeric and ginger roots…should it be 1”? One teaspoon of ground replacement would be significantly less. I know these should be potent, but when I add ginger to my juices, a couple inches can be pretty spicy for a quart of juice. Thank you for the recipe. 

  16. what would be the equivalent in teaspoons or tablespoons of the ginger root. I buy packaged finely grated ginger root or ginger paste.

I love certain flavors and this was really delightful to me; I would easily consider pouring it in a cup of ice with a lime LeCroix (flavored sparkling water) as a refreshing beverage, not just taking it as a shot.  My husband, on the other hand, who has horrible eating habits, hated it. So, a tale of two cities, here. 😂

  18. Hi. Couple of questions… do we peel the orange and lemon? also is the amount of ginger root and turmeric root correct? an 11 inch (ELEVEN inch) piece of of each root?

    1. No, you don’t have to peel the orange and lemon. And it is 1 (1 inch) piece of turmeric root and ginger root 🙂

      1. You can juice the orange and lemon without peeling, but don’t blend the peels 🙂

  19. I am trying it right now but, I have to say, I thought it was 11 inches of both ginger and turmeric root then I was like, “Nah! That can’t be right! It has to be 1 piece 1” long.” Good news is I have enough to make 11 batches now. 😂😂😂

  20. Wow!  Help me out here. Is this supposed to burn going down?  I thought it would taste good but oh boy. Is it supposed to be mixed with something?  I know it’s good for me.  I followed the instructions carefully and rechecked after I tasted it. What can be done?

    1. I would reduce the garlic, ginger and pepper by half and see if it’s better for you! It really varies person to person 🙂

    1. I make several batches at a time, freeze then in ice trays and then add how many I need to my morning protein drink.
      I will also make a batch and keep in the fridge…tastes even better the next day after the ingredients have a chance to meld together.

    2. The directions say to peel the ginger but the photo shows a chunk of ginger in the blender not peeled. Can I skip peeling the ginger?

    1. Yes, for sure! Just use a whole orange instead of the grapefruit. You can also try a whole red pepper – just seed it before you put it in the blender.

  23. Can you make this with ginger stir-in paste and powdered tumeric? And if so, how much of each would you suggest?

    1. Yes, use 1 teaspoon powdered turmeric 1/2 to 1 tablespoon of garlic paste – the garlic can be potent so try 1/2 first and adjust as need be.

  24. I can’t find turmeric root where I live. Can I used ground turmeric instead and if so, how much should I use?

  26. Should it say 11 inch piece of ginger? That would be nearly a foot in length.
    Maybe it is a formating typo 1 x 1inch

  27. Thank you for this, I’m looking forward to trying it. I do have one question–the recipe says that it makes one serving, but I’m guessing that if that is the case, then a “shot” isn’t a full serving, correct?

    1. Hello! Yes, that was a little confusing – sorry about that. Hopefully this is a little clearer. The

      recipe makes approximately six 2-ounce servings (or six 2-ounce “shots”), depending on the size of the fruit, of course.
