Watermelon Agua Fresca – I can’t think of anything more thirst quenching than this on a hot summer day – chilled watermelon puree, a squeeze of lime, over a glass of ice.

Agua Fresca – Can't think of anything more thirst quenching than this on a hot summer day – chilled watermelon puree, a squeeze of lime, over a glass of ice. Watermelon Agua Fresca

Agua fresca is as common in Mexico as ice tea is here in the States. And BONUS, since watermelon is naturally sweet, there’s no need to add any sugar! A few other favorite summer drinks are Chia Watermelon Fresca, Fresh Brewed Iced Tea with Mint, and Nojito (Non-alcoholic Mojito).

Watermelon is an excellent source of vitamin C, lycopene, beta-carotene
and a great choice for it’s anti-inflammatory and antioxidant health
benefits, so eat as much as you can, before the summer’s over.

Last weekend I spent a few days out in Montauk for a little
family getaway. It’s only about 2 hours away by car (if you
don’t count traffic) but since it’s on the most eastern tip of Long Island, where
all the highways from NYC merge into one road, there’s always
traffic. It’s worth it though – the beaches, lighthouse, restaurants, shopping  – it’s so much fun!

After a morning at the beach we went to the town to grab some lunch at La Brisa. Aguas frescas, horchata, fish tacos – I was in heaven. Probably had the best ceviche I’ve had in a long time (although a bit overpriced) but I couldn’t stop talking about it all weekend. I had a fish taco and pork taco with the watermelon agua fresca. As I sat there, I kept thinking I can’t believe I don’t have this recipe on my blog. So of course, I came back, bought some watermelon and here it is, tasted exactly like the one I had in La Brisa.

And you may even want to make some skinny fish taco’s to go with it!

  1. We had a very hot night here on Friday- we knew it was coming, so we bought the ingredients for this. Absolutely delicious, refreshing, and gone………within minutes of making it. Double batch and all that. I highly recommend this to people who love watermelon like we do- so simple and easy. Well, that is, if you’re not a dummy like me and try to make it in the food processor- don’t do it, folks- just fine the blender. Your counters will thank you. Joking aside, this recipe is a keeper and will for sure be in the summer dinner beverage menu. Another winner, Gina. Thank you!

  2. So good! We had a watermelon that was too ripe to eat and it was perfect for this. I blended with some lime juice, rimmed the glass with lime and sea salt, and garnished with a mint leaf. It’s good with or without tequila 😉

  3. I would like a recipe for a family of six, I like to add chunks of watermelon, and a slice of watermelon for garnish, I liked that it doesn’t add sugar.

  4. How can this be zero points? I thought pureed fruit had to be counted? I put the calorie information into the points calculator and got 4 points on Freestyle.  Can you help clarify?

      1. It goes in the blender. This meets the exact definition of when WW says fruit has points. When it’s blendeed.

  5. My daughter loves watermelon! This will definitely make her more excited at school when she knows she will get a good treat for being good at school.

if i make a large batch ahead of time, how long will it stay together in the fridge? thanks!

  7. Love watermelon and cantaloupe water! I usually just throw together until good so thanks for a recipe:)

  8. I've been doing this lately, less the water! I actually purchased Svedka Strawberry Lemonade Vodka recently – looked around my kitchen and couldn't find any suitable mixers but a ton of watermelon, so voila! Pureed watermelon + flavored vodka + seltzer, yum! Need to remember the lime slices next time 🙂

  9. This recipe was a huge hit at home. I put the watermelon in the freezer by mistake… And then I remembered your recipe! Thank you!

As a watermelon fanatic, this is a favorite of mine. O like to use sparkling water (La Croix lime cases are a steal at Costco). So zippy and refreshing.

  11. Its very mouth watering, the juice is perfect in beach. And that taco looks very delicious to.

  12. Wow! This looks awesome. I've actually been wanting to come up with a similar recipe but yours looks so good, I might have to try yours first. 🙂

  13. Do you have to drink this within a certain amount of hours or is it good for a couple days? I'd like to puree a bunch of watermelon at once so I don't have to keep pulling out the blender but I won't want to if it's going to get gross sitting in the fridge for a few days.

  14. I want to make this, but watermelons here average $14-19/piece, so until I successfully grown my own, this will have to wait. I enjoy eating it too much to experiment!

Watermelon is my favourite summer flavour, so I can't wait to try this later in the year – and it looks so simple!

  17. My husband and I lived in Mexico for 4 years. Our favorite restaurant there served all types of fresh fruit Agua Frescas all the time. My favorite was watermelon. I have been making it in the summer since moving back to the states (1981). I add a touch of salt to my drink cause I also put salt on my watermelon when eating it! Thanks for teaching lots of others about our fabulous drink!!

  18. Hi Gina! Love your site and your recipes. I cook almost exclusively from your recipes or the ones on the WW website. Thank you! One question here though. When I calculated the Points Plus values for this it came out to 2, not 0. It was my order standing that fruit is 0 but not fruit juice. Did you include the sugar in the nutritional value?

  19. This looks absolutely delicious!
Oh.. Everything is overpriced here and there is always traffic on LI. Everywhere. Especially on the weekends in the summer. Here is a tip: you can get up-to-minute traffic on Traffic.com. Even the local news station doesn't update as fast as them 🙂 I use them daily!

Looks like you had a fun family vacation! I've been making Watermelon Agua Fresca all summer long! I'm sure going to miss it when watermelon season is over!

  21. Looks delicious and refreshing. I have one question, though. It says there's one gram of fat in it. Where does the fat come from? I was under the impression that watermelon was fat-free, and other than water and the garnishes, I don't see anything else in it…

This is amazing with no garnishes too 🙂
I like this as a less messy way to enjoy a delicious summer staple !!! Thanks I am on the Paleo cleanse and this is a wonderful treat.

  23. Mmmmmm how genius! eeeek thanks for reminding me that summer's fruits like watermelon are coming to an end~good thing I have one in my kitchen right now, hehe. Beautiful photos by the way! 😀

  24. The comments before the recipe said there was no sugar…….however, the recipe itself says to puree the water, watermelon and sugar…………

No sugar (typo) First time I made it I put 1 tbsp sugar but realized it doesn't need it. Second time I made it, it was perfect without.
